The battle of three titans of painting -Jim Shaw, Chris Martin & Klaas Oosterboer- in Rotterdam


Stick around the art world long enough and you will hear that the art of painting is dead. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen’s new exhibition in an old Submarine Wharf, in collaboration with Port of Rotterdam, proves the art world wrong, painting is alive and kicking! So, who is putting the hard work in? Given the raw space of an enormous, former Submarine wharf in the Rotterdam’s docklands area Jim Shaw (USA, 1952), Chris Martin (USA, 1954) and Klaas Oosterboer (Netherlands, 1959) worked vigorously in the months leading up to the opening to create the new exhibition on site. It became a true ‘battle of the Titans’, but what an outcome.


At first sight this monster of a building (seven stories high and a hall space of at least a soccer field) must have been a initial source of horror for the artists. The three halls that make up the grand space of this former Submarine complex demands a totally different approach to painting. Jim Shaw, Chris Martin and Klaas Oosterboer took up the challenge and managed, against the odds, to transform this monster into the three biggest art studios in the world. Read more...
